In anticipation of the world premiere of Ravi Shankar’s only opera Sukanya, the Bagri Foundation presents the seventh episode of The Music Room, a short online film series, exploring dialogues between classical Indian and Western music with the opera’s conductor David Murphy. The seventh episode is dedicated to instruments.
Indian Classical Music features an enormous variety of instruments; its dynamism and capacity of renewal is notably visible through the adoption and appropriation of instruments from other traditions. This film focuses on the history of four of the most important instruments in the Indian tradition: the veena, sitar, tabla and mridangam. Discover the sound of the percussion instruments and take sneak a peek of how tabla and mridangam will feature in Ravi Shankar’s opera (May 2017) with a special clip of the work in progress.
